What is MAS Tarbiya?

MAS Tarbiya is the department dedicated to the personal, spiritual, and leadership development of MAS members. It provides individuals with the knowledge, tools, and support needed to grow in faith, character, and responsibility, while empowering them to positively impact their families and communities. The word Tarbiya comes from Arabic and means growth, development, and refinement. It reflects a holistic approach to nurturing individuals; spiritually, morally, intellectually, and socially. Just as Tarbiya is used to describe the upbringing of children, MAS Tarbiya focuses on developing well-rounded individuals who live with purpose and service. Rooted in the Qur’an and the example of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Tarbiya follows the prophetic model of cultivating people, not just sharing knowledge. The Prophet (pbuh) raised a generation that carried the message of Islam forward and transformed society, and MAS continues this legacy by investing in individuals as the foundation of meaningful change. Through structured programs, mentorship, and continuous learning, MAS Tarbiya works to raise committed, disciplined American Muslims who embody Islamic values and lead with integrity.

The Five Foundations of MAS Tarbiya

1) Islamically Oriented

Individuals who live with God-consciousness and intention. They understand the purpose of their existence, seek Allah’s guidance, and strive to embody sincerity, humility, and consistency in their worship and daily life.

2) Bearers of the Message

Individuals who understand Islam’s mission and higher objectives (Al-Maqāṣid) and feel a responsibility to carry its values forward. They contribute to their communities through organized, disciplined, and values-driven efforts.

3) Agents of Positive Change

Individuals who put their beliefs into action. They are proactive, self-aware, and committed to improving themselves while positively influencing their families, communities, and society.

4) Exemplary Citizens

Individuals who love their country and work toward its betterment. They uphold justice, dignity, service, and civic responsibility, striving to contribute positively to the broader society while remaining grounded in Islamic values.

5) Lifelong Learners

Individuals who value continuous learning and growth. They seek knowledge in Islamic sciences and in all areas of life, including personal development, family life, leadership, civic engagement, and professional excellence.
